Five Star Fundamental #18: Be Relentless About Continuous Improvement

The Five Star Way describes the values, behaviors, principles and practices that are the foundation of our unique culture. Featuring 29 Fundamentals, it explains how we relate to each other, our customers and even our suppliers. It's who we are and it's what drives our extraordinary success. According to Fundamental #18, each of our employees needs to be focused on improving continuously.

Why is continuous improvement so essential, so critical to our success that it’s one of our fundamentals? Because we are never satisfied with the status quo, are committed to constantly improve the quality and consistency of our work and have a commitment to lifelong learning. 

Our Five Guiding Principles

 Each of our fundamentals has a direct connection to the five guiding principles that define the values, capabilities and competencies we offer our customers. These include:

  • Service
  • Technology
  • Attention to Detail
  • Responsiveness
  • Safety 

These guiding principles helped guide us to define the behaviors detailed in the Five Star Way. Fundamental #18, being relentless about continuous improvement, applies to each of these principles.

The Importance of Continuous Improvement

It is no secret that if a business does not continually improve its processes, then it will lose its competitive edge. In order to ensure that Five Star is continually reviewing every aspect of our business — and objectively evaluating where there are opportunities to improve — keeps us from settling for the status quo. We constantly ask ourselves, “If better is possible, is ‘good’ good enough?”

This approach to continuous improvement drives the development of metrics to measure the effectiveness of our current systems. It requires that we measure both our service levels and operations in ways to ensure that we are constantly improving our offerings and strengthening our relationships with our customers.

While we are not perfect, our zest for continuous improvement keeps us competitive and ensures our customers that we are on top of consumer trends, have a robust product development process, apply the latest technology in our manufacturing plants and constantly work to improve every aspect of our service.
